Adventures You’re Marlow Finch. You keep the books at the grocer’s. Your neighbor Agnes has hurt her ankle. She has a tea to give at four. Nine things to buy. The shops shut at one. And one line on the list nobody can read. First stop: the grocer’s where you work. Sid won’t put it on Agnes’s account without her signed note. The rule by the till is in your handwriting. Then, at the baker’s, you pick up the wrong basket. The delivery man rides off with Agnes’s. You’re left holding his bread. The last lemon of the season is on her list. A boy got there first. Every shop is sure it can read that last line. Each one reads something different. Each shop shuts by its own clock. No two clocks agree. By a quarter to one, the whole street is arguing about the time. How much trouble can nine things on a shopping list cause? Early Closing Nine things before one o’clock. You are Marlow Finch, a grocer's bookkeeper whose Wednesday half-day begins with returning a neighbor's dish. Agnes Pryor has a sprained ankle, a tea to give at four, and nine things she needs from the shops. Along the Parade, every shopkeeper has a perfectly reasonable rule, every small favor threatens to become another errand, and nobody agrees what the last line says. Ask questions in your own words, choose your way through the shops, and decide how helpful one man can afford to be. The shops shut at one, and even the clocks cannot agree when that is.
- Shopkeepers, small favors, and splendidly reasonable complications.
- A puzzling last line and a street full of conflicting advice.
- Two chapters of dry humor, with time passing when you act.
